In 2004 he started Leo Steen Wines, which concentrates on divine Chenin Blanc (AKA Steen in South Africa, but ironically a family name as well!) but also makes Cab Franc, Chardonnay, and Grenache.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe has been in California for 20 years but he maintains a European palate and focuses on traditional European winemaking techniques like foot treading, natural yeasts, lower alcohols and less new oak. He’s the perfect balance of professional winemaker and sommelier and a fascinating guy all around.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis sparkling wine passion project born in 2022 has been something they've wanted to do for several years. We are so happy to be able to pass this passionate Sparkling Chenin on to you. Made from 100% Chenin Blanc. \u003c\/span\u003eBubbles of Steen is a dry sparkling white made from old vine Chenin Blanc planted in 1979. Whole cluster pressed, then fermented in stainless steel, and aged on the lees for 10 weeks in neutral barrel before aging an additional 14 months sur latte.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis wine opens up with inviting notes of grapefruit, lemon zest and almonds followed by subtle toasty bread notes. The mousse is creamy on the pallet with fine gentle bubbles, flavors are toasty and nutty with apple and chamomile flowers with a crisp and dry finish. This a great sipping wine and perfect to enjoy with oysters, shellfish, and sushi.
