Gemischter Satz is the wine of Vienna. Meaning mixed planting or mixed set, it can contain up to 20 grape varieties, all grown within the city limits. Wine cultivation in Vienna is as old as the city itself, with evidence of viticulture dating back to the Middle Ages. This fascinating, versatile wine naturally lends itself to a dazzling array of iterations, the perfect food accompaniment, or, as in the hands of Stefan and Alexander Fuchs, as a contemplative, aromatic tribute to its unique slice of land. This unique wine is a testament to winemaker Stefan Fuchs' desire to experiment with traditional Austrian varietals. Sourced from a young vineyard in Vienna's southern outskirts, the grapes for this Gemischter Satz were carefully selected for their aromatic qualities. Unlike many traditional Gemischter Satzes, this wine is comprised entirely of aromatic varieties, including Traminer, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Gelber Muskateller, Rotgipfler, and Zierfandler. The winemaking process is characterized by minimal intervention. After a two-week maceration, the wine is gently pressed and aged for a year in used French oak barrels. No fining or filtration is employed, and sulfur additions are kept to a minimum. The result is a wine that is both complex and approachable, with flavors of ripe stone fruit, citrus, and floral notes. The influence of the sandy-clay and flysch sandstone soils, as well as the unique microclimate, is evident in the wine's mineral character and vibrant acidity. The name "Jesuit" is a nod to the Jesuitensteig, the road where the vineyard is located. This wine offers a fascinating exploration of the potential of Austria's aromatic white grapes, showcasing the Stefan's commitment to natural winemaking and terroir expression.
