Khatia Darguashvili started Anapea with her husband after purchasing abandoned land in Kvareli. Committed to rebuilding soil health from its inception and introducing the world to the ancestral wines of Georgia (the original makers of ‘orange’ wine like this one! ‘Sandro’ is a fascinating and elegant co-fermentation of native Georgian grapes Kisi, Khikhvi, and Mtsvane. The wine spends 6 months as whole bunches in shallow-buried qvevri (clay jars) , then the fruit is pressed and the wine ages again in qvevri buried deeper so that it remains at a cooler temperature for another 6 months before bottling. Gorgeous on the nose with notes of bergamot, wild herbs, and river rocks, and on the palate an array of dried apricot, dried flowers and blood orange. Unfined and unfiltered. Bottled with minimal sulfur as necessary.
