The relatively young estate Hajszan Neumann was founded in the early 2000s by Stefan Hajszan, who was born to Hungarian immigrants to Austria in 1960. Hajszan dreamed of owning his own wine estate and started to farm biodynamically immediately. In 2005, investor Heinz Neumann came on board. In 2013, they approached Fritz Wieninger to take over – at the time, Wieninger was the only other estate in Vienna working biodynamically. Wieninger duly assumed command, decided to retain the name and label, and now sees the estate as his creative outlet. He makes various styles, such as whole-berry and skin-fermented wines from amphorae. Additionally, he extended his holdings on the Nussberg by about 20 hectares, which he has since reduced to 15 hectares. The most important plantings are Wiener Gemischter Satz, followed by Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and Weissburgunder with smaller proportions of Red and Yellow Traminer, Zweigelt and Cabernet Franc. The Natural Grüner Veltliner 2023 from Hajszan Neumann is a vibrant city wine from Vienna that combines the classic elegance of Grüner Veltliner with natural winemaking. Light amber, delicately cloudy. Exciting nose of pepper, grass and meadow herbs, plus ribwort, caraway and marjoram. Citric hints of orange zest, mandarin and lime. Taut, fine-grained, grippy tannins on the palate, enlivened by fresh acidity. Chamomile, daisies and a hint of mango. Long finish, complex and multi-layered. Characterful orange wine with ageing potential.
