Jean Foillard helped mainstream both the natural wine movement and the realization that Beaujolais can be complex and a long-lived wine. Paler in color than in recent years, the 2021 Cote du Py from Foillard is an absolute delight. Transparent ruby in the glass with an intense and vibrant nose, layering raspberry, cherry blossom and fresh strawberries together with just a hint of rosemary. The palate is bursting with crunchy red fruits and lively, refreshing acidity. Lipsmacking and moreish already, it is an absolute joy to drink now. The tannins are fine with a slight bite, adding textural intrigue without being obtrusive. Coming in at 12.5% alcohol, it is sappy, fine and very elegant. Deceptively long and serious, it wears its pedigree easily this year - you can still age this wine. A very fine, delicious vintage here.
