Domaine Michèle et Patrice Rion is a 7-hectare estate based in Premeaux-Prissey on the edge of Nuits-St-Georges. It’s still a fairly under-the-radar name, but there is real quality here and it won’t stay hidden for long. Michèle and Patrice make a superb range of Chambolle-Musigny, Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-St-Georges from a mix of their own biodynamically-farmed vines and a small proportion of négociant cuvées. Patrice began the domaine in 2000, following a split from his father’s domaine, Daniel Rion et Fils, where he was the winemaker. Today it’s truly a family-run affair, their son Maxime joined the domaine in 2005 following the completion of his Oenology studies in Dijon, and is now the driving force. The domaine makes predominantly Pinot Noir,  although they grow a small amount of Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc in Nuits-St-Georges. Their monopole Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Clos Saint Marc is the jewel in their crown. The Nuits Vieilles Vignes has temporarily lost its Aux Barrières component, replaced this year by the very well-situated Les Longecourts, which is just below Les St-Georges. A heady nose of griotte cherry, with excellent concentration and a deft balance. The wine feels so beautifully smooth, with a lovely deep core of sweet fruit. Classic Burgundy through and through. This is very good already and may become excellent – certainly for a villages!
